Abstract
Peer abuse affects young people in school regardless of their social status, gender, socioeconomic status, and other health determinants. The objective was to describe and analyze the experiences of mothers regarding peer abuse of their daughters and sons. To this end, a qualitative study was conducted based on thematic analysis of interviews with a group of mothers of young people who have been victims or witnesses of peer abuse from two public secondary schools: rural and urban. The results show that the mothers' stories expressed the emotional distress caused by knowing that their daughters and sons experience this phenomenon, sharing that they too had been victims. It is essential to provide rural schools with more effective tools to manage this problem because, at least in this study, the violence was more severe. Through the meanings they expressed, it is possible to visualize and recognize that mothers need listening spaces for positive socio-emotional development in which they can understand and manage their emotions. It is concluded that peer abuse transcends the family, so it is essential to make national efforts in the educational field to strengthen the family-school bond.
