One of the major challenges still facing higher education institutions (HEIs) in Mexico is the mainstreaming of a gender perspective—not only in their administrative and academic processes, but also in their most noble purpose: the generation of knowledge that is sensitive to social issues and contributes to reducing the structural inequality gaps that affect society. Despite progress in institutionalizing a gender perspective in universities in recent years, asymmetries persist in scientific and technological development that affect women and men differently, with women facing greater obstacles to accessing and remaining in higher education. This article presents the main insights derived from a research stay at a public university in the State of Mexico, which yielded various strategies for mainstreaming a gender perspective into academic research processes at the undergraduate level. It presents the main findings of the institutional assessment, as well as the obstacles and resistance identified in the incorporation of this approach, ranging from curriculum design to the selection of research lines and topics among both the faculty and the student body.
